Course Description:

This course asks how and why species and ecosystems are increasingly becoming endangered, and what are the causalities behind the ongoing biodiversity loss. We go through ecological facts and societal dimensions tied to endangerment. Red-list assessments are used to evaluate the risks of extinction (for species) and ecological collapse (for ecosystems) both nationally and internationally, and we familiarize ourselves with the red-listing methodology while keeping in mind that information on endangerment is a key tool for conservation.

After finishing this course the student:

- is able to explain what being red-listed means both for species and ecosystems
- is able to describe the basic principles of assessing the red-list status as well as the meaning of different red-list categories
- is able to describe and exemplify the main reasons for endangerment on national and international levels
- is able to discuss broader ecological and societal implications of endangerment and biodiversity loss.
